Kathryn Wright, Psy.D.

Dr. Wright received her doctorate from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and is a licensed clinical psychologist. She has been with GMH since 1999. She works with a wide variety of issues including depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, job stress, low self-esteem, perfectionism, family issues, work-life and career-family balance, body image difficulties and food issues, spiritual concerns and improving creativity.

Dr Wright specializes in working with those who suffer from trauma and abuse histories and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She offers EMDR therapy and is a member of the EMDR International Association. EMDR has been listed as one of the top three trauma therapies by the Veteran’s Administration. EMDR can also be very effective in helping those who suffer from a childhood history of family difficulties and lack of nurturing. Examples include growing up in an alcoholic family, or with parents who were very critical, or with family member(s) who suffer from mental illness, or in a home characterized by conflict and arguments. A breast cancer survivor herself, Dr. Wright also has a special interest in working with clients who have been diagnosed with cancer and other medical conditions.

Another area of interest for Dr. Wright is the effect of media and technology on individuals and society. She has published numerous articles on the computer game industry, the Internet, and females in technology, and has enjoyed public speaking engagements and media appearances including WRAL TV5 and National Public Radio.

Dr. Wright believes that people seek help for many different reasons. Often, the coping skills that we learned in our youth no longer seem to be working. Our past experiences affect how we see the world, relate to others, handle our feelings, and cope with stress. Changing those patterns can seem difficult or even frightening. Sometimes people suffer from painful symptoms of stress or unhappiness that get in the way of their daily functioning. Others experience a general sense of dissatisfaction with their lives and are looking for a way to clarify who they are, what they want, and how to change old patterns of behavior.

Whatever your reasons for seeking therapy, Dr. Wright will work in partnership with you to clarify your goals, expectations, and time frame for treatment. Her approach tends to be comprehensive: she works with you to evaluate your total health and well being, including multiple areas of your life and functioning. It is not unusual for Dr. Wright to help her clients to develop life plans that include accessing resources beyond the therapy room, such as nutritional counseling, medication management, journaling, healthy exercise options and movement therapy, medical check-ups, social networks, neurofeedback, and relaxation and stress-management practices such as yoga, mindfulness and meditation.

Dr. Wright is committed to providing a safe, non-judgmental, respectful and professional therapeutic atmosphere. She considers herself to be a resource and guide for you along your path of self-discovery, healing, and change. She believes we all have the capacity for growth and change within ourselves, and considers it a privilege to be witness to people's personal journeys.
