Deborah L. Planting is a clinical psychologist
who is a graduate of Syracuse University. She received her master’s
degree at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands and practiced
there for many years as a psychologist before returning to the United States
and becoming licensed in North Carolina.
Deborah does psychotherapy with individual adults age 20 and older, as well as couples therapy. She works with anxiety, adult ADHD, mood disorders, stress management and/or time management, anger management, burnout, life changes, and helping people to learn new ways to deal with and accept life-altering situations. She believes that each individual has the potential to change by creating new possibilities. People are sometimes not aware of their own strengths. Deborah is deeply motivated to bring your strengths to consciousness, and to help you to use these resources to reach your goals. Deborah integrates various therapy approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral, which emphasizes the important role of thinking in how we feel and what we do. Thoughts, which make us anxious, sad, or angry for example, are questioned, explored, and examined as to their validity and desired reactions to them. Once identified, these thoughts can be altered or replaced with thoughts leading to more desirable reactions and influence functioning in daily life. She also specializes in Solution-Focused Techniques. She learned these skills from the experts in the field, Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg. Simply stated, this method encourages individuals to do more of what is working and to stop doing things that are not working and to do something else. Attention is drawn towards solutions to problems, focusing on the present and future, encouraging and supporting the setting of goals. After choosing a specific goal, an action plan is made and guidance is given in creating steps and staying on track to achieve satisfying results. This approach does not exclude, if necessary, discussion of past issues and background that may be affecting and influencing current functioning. Deborah added Neurofeedback, or brainwave biofeedback, to her practice in 2007. She does neurofeedback with adults, children and adolescents and specializes in ADHD, anxiety and tic disorder. She is also certified in Clinical Hypnosis from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, and serves on Board of Directors for the Medical Hypnosis Foundation. Hypnosis is an effective technique for changing habits and patterns, such as weight control and smoking cessation. She is a Certified trainer for the QuitSmart smoking cessation program.

If we did
all the things we were capable of doing, we would literally astonish ourselves.
